Tiger Stadium is almost history! The City has awarded a contract for demolishing Tiger Stadium. And once again, like the seat sale debacle, they're giving away millions. The two company's involved will do the demolition for free, and make well over $1 million selling the scrap. A group calling itself the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy is trying to save a portion of the ballpark. But the city is only giving them until June 1st to raise $369,000 to pay for security for six months. And as of April 23, their website is still "under construction" so there isn't a way to donate to the group. What's the big rush? Why exactly does the stadium need to be town down RIGHT NOW? The city makes a big deal about how they're bringing new life to the Book Cadillac which sat vacant since 1984--15 years longer than the stadium, and in much worse condition. Why not treat Tiger Stadium with the same respect? All I can say is shame on Detroit's Economic Development Corp. and the Detroit City Council for allowing one of Michigan's most historically important and revered buildings to be destroyed.
